3. Digital Devices – Develop a Digital Document

This resource looks at using images from a digital device, to develop a digital document (i.e. poster) students will need to be able to:

  • Identify the correct settings to prepare a camera for download of images
  • Set basic menu settings
  • Connect a camera/ memory card to a computer
  • Save data
  • Retrieve data for use in a software package to develop a digital document

It is recommended that prior to using this resource that the student goes through the resource EDU3A on tips for using a digital device and checklist.

Resources required:

  • Digital images – on portable drive, memory card or computer
  • Access to a computer
  • Access to a printer
  • Access to a person who has required knowledge and skills to be of assistance if required

Learning Opportunities

Through this exercise the students will get practical experience in connecting a device (in this case a digital camera) to a computer and making correct selections to access the camera.

The download process will need to be adjusted to suit each camera model and Operating system. Saving the files to an appropriate place will also need to be done in accordance with college/ institute practices. Some may even use external storage devices.

The student needs to be able to retrieve an image and place it into a document, along with other layout methods (i.e. textboxes) to produce a poster.

Ideas for posters could be:

  • A school or Clontarf event
  • A sports club celebration (fundraiser, Grand Final etc.)
  • A historical day celebrated
  • A party
