This resource looks at the importance of develop an understanding of different levels of government, their role and the services they provide, and examine the purpose of elections.

This learning resource has five parts that can be completed individually or grouped together depending on the target group or time allocated for the lesson.

Resources required:

Activity One – Brainstorm, butcher’s paper, whiteboard or a Smartboard.

Activity Two – Video and Discussion, access to Internet for video and butchers paper or a Smartboard.

Activity Three – Small group work, you will need to print off appendix 1.

Note for Activity Four. The following exercise will take more than 20 minutes to complete you may want to do over two sessions or include the Academy as a whole in the activity.

Activity Four – Class role-play and Discussion ‐ mock election. You will need to print off appendix 2 and additional PDFs (Numbers will depend on format of the exercise).

Activity Five – Understanding of learning check ‐ Individual exercise, you will need to print off appendix 3 for each student and keep as evidence.
